The way we use phones may be about to change forever. OpenAI is reportedly working on an OpenAI AI agent smartphone that ditches the familiar grid of app icons and replaces them with AI-powered agents that complete tasks through simple conversation. No official confirmation has been made by any company involved, and analysts stress that these plans remain speculative.
According to supply-chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, OpenAI is partnering with chip makers MediaTek and Qualcomm to co-design a custom processor built specifically for running AI on the device itself. Chinese manufacturer Luxshare, which also assembles products for Apple, is named as the exclusive system design and manufacturing partner. The chip specifications are expected to be finalized by late 2026 or early 2027, with mass production of the OpenAI AI agent smartphone targeted for 2028.
The device is being designed to think, listen, and act. The phone would use its cameras, microphone, and sensors to continuously understand what the user is doing and what they need. Smaller AI models would run directly on the phone for fast, private responses, while heavier tasks would be sent to the cloud. This means simple things like setting reminders or controlling smart home devices could work even without an internet connection. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman hinted at this direction in April 2026, posting on social media that it is a good time to rethink how operating systems and user interfaces are designed.
The OpenAI AI agent smartphone would directly challenge Apple and Google, both of which are already building AI features into their own devices. Apple’s iPhone uses on-device AI through its Neural Engine chip, while Google’s Pixel phones run custom Tensor chips designed for AI tasks. Samsung is also rumored to be adding more AI power to its upcoming Galaxy lineup.
Experts warn that building a new phone ecosystem from scratch is extremely difficult. Battery limits, developer adoption, user habits, and regulatory pressure from bodies like the EU could all slow or block the project entirely.
