Kathmandu: Volkswagen has officially launched the Volkswagen ID. Polo electric car, a brand new all-electric hatchback designed for everyday families and commuters who want quality, space, and modern technology without spending a fortune. The car made its world premiere in April 2026 and is going on sale across Europe, starting in Germany, in the second quarter of 2026.
The Volkswagen ID. Polo electric car is built on Volkswagen’s updated MEB+ platform and comes in three power options: 85 kW, 99 kW, and 155 kW, giving buyers the choice between a more affordable entry version and a more powerful top-spec model. All versions are front-wheel drive and use a brand new electric motor producing 290 Nm of torque. The top 155 kW model goes from 0 to 100 km/h in just 7.1 seconds and reaches a top speed of 160 km/h. The car seats five people comfortably and offers 441 litres of boot space with the seats up, growing to 1,243 litres with the rear seats folded down, more than many larger cars in its class.

Battery, Charging, and Thermal Management
The Volkswagen ID. Polo electric car uses Volkswagen’s new Group Unified Cell pack design, which integrates cells directly into the pack structure to save space and improve energy density. The 52 kWh version uses an NMC battery, while the base 85 kW and 99 kW models use a more durable LFP battery that is known for longer life and better performance in cold temperatures. Both packs use active liquid cooling to keep the battery at a safe temperature during charging and driving.
The onboard AC charger runs at 11 kW, meaning a full charge from empty takes around 5.5 hours at home. At a public fast charger, the 52 kWh version charges from 10 to 80 percent in just 24 minutes at up to 105 kW. The 37 kWh version does the same in 23 minutes at up to 90 kW. The car also supports vehicle-to-load charging, meaning it can power external devices or appliances at up to 3.6 kW, a useful feature for camping or emergencies.
Real-World Range: What to Actually Expect
Volkswagen quotes 454 km WLTP range for the 52 kWh model, but real-world driving will deliver less. Independent data from EV Database estimates a realistic range of around 335 km in normal mixed driving conditions at 20 degrees Celsius. Car and Driver suggests the EPA-equivalent range could be closer to 270 km. In cold weather or at high motorway speeds, range will drop further, as it does with all electric vehicles. The 37 kWh LFP model is expected to achieve around 255 km in real-world conditions.
Despite the difference between official and real figures, the Volkswagen ID. Polo electric car remains one of the most efficient small electric cars available, consuming just 133 Wh per km on the WLTP test and around 115 Wh per km in vehicle energy terms, numbers comparable to much lighter cars.
What Comes Next
Volkswagen has already confirmed a high-performance ID. Polo GTI variant producing 223 PS, expected to be previewed in 2027. This will target buyers who want the fun and excitement of a traditional hot hatchback but in an all-electric package. Sales of the standard Volkswagen ID. Polo electric cars are launching in Germany first before rolling out to other European markets through the rest of 2026.
